Err… there wasn’t one!

I did the ride completely solo. It was a conscious decision to do so but I must admit to feeling a bit apprehensive about it before I left. There were two things in particular that worried me…

The first, that I was going to be basically on my own for 15 days – I haven’t done that, like, ever. I mean, I knew that I’d meet people in youth hostels and so on… but that’s not the same as doing the ride as part of a group or with people I know.

The second, that I seemed to have developed some sort of problem with my left knee before I left. It was OK while I was riding (which is why I decided to start the ride) but there was a definite niggle somewhere which I noticed most when walking.

In the end I met up with a couple of other guys, Matt and Steve, early on in the first hostel at Golant. We were doing pretty much the same route on the same schedule. Whilst I didn’t do much of the riding with them (apart from the final 10 miles) we did meet up occasionally during the day and it was great having people to talk to on a regular basis each evening.

And my knee? Well that seemed to get gradually better as the ride progressed – possibly as a result of all the Ibuprofen gel that I was putting on it 3 times a day. Whatever… it survived without any major problems. Phew!
